ARTH 6923 Post-Impressionism through Abstract Expressionism(3 hours)
Covers developments in art and visual culture from the art of Matisse to the mid-20th century covering artistic developments such as Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Russian Constructivism, Dada, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. Puts the work of these artists into a broader cultural, historical, social, and political context and examine various discourses that shaped the art of the twentieth century such as modernism and the avant garde, the impact of modern technology and science, primitivism, and colonialism, and the two World Wars. Slide lecture and discussion.
