International Engineering/Science and Language Program

The International Engineering and Language/International Science and Language dual degree program offers students the opportunity to earn a degree (B.S.) in an engineering or science discipline and a degree (B.A.) in a language offered by the School of Language and Literature  in five years.

The program features a study abroad experience during the fourth year. During the first semester abroad, students study engineering, science, language, culture and electives in the target language at a partner university. During the second semester abroad, students complete an internship with an engineering, science or technology firm or laboratory in the target language and country.

Engineering and science majors include biochemistry , biology biology pre-med , chemical engineering  , chemistry , computer science , computer simulation and gaming , cyber security electrical engineering , computer engineering , Physics, B.S. , geosciences (geology option) mathematics , mechanical engineering , and engineering physics.

Language majors are available in French , German  and Spanish .  Students interested in Chinese or Russian may consider the self-designed major option through Kendall College of Arts and Sciences  .

Application Requirements

Students apply to the International Engineering/Science and Language program as part of their application to TU or soon after their arrival on campus.

Continuing Eligibility Requirements

Students enrolled in the IEL/ISL program will be assigned a faculty mentor for each degree program. Students must meet with each of their two mentors each semester. Students are subject to the minimum grade and other academic requirements of both degree programs in which they are enrolled.

Students enrolled in the IEL/ISL program are required to take the Language Placement exam as early as possible in their TU career, and to meet with the IEL/ISL program director each semester to stay on track. Students should begin language courses as early as their first semester. Students must take at least two semesters or the equivalent of 3000- or 4000-level language courses prior to the year abroad.

Students admitted to the IEL/ISL may substitute ENGL 3003 for FS 1973. Students are exempt from AS 2001. In accordance with the long-standing College of Engineering and Computer Science policy on language courses, credit for two Block courses may be obtained for two foreign language courses in the same language. Language courses that count as Block courses for the B.S. count as Block courses toward the B.A. IEL/ISL students fulfill both Block 3 course requirements through their B.S..

Study Abroad

During the fall semester abroad, students take up to five courses (usually two block courses and three non-core engineering or sciences courses or electives) in the target language. Students receive credit toward Tulsa Curriculum requirements for both the B.A. and B.S.; College and major specific course requirements for the B.S.; and, if the courses are taken in the local language, language major requirements for the B.A.

During the spring semester abroad, students enroll in one credit hour of internship. They retain full-time status while enrolled in the internship. Students who complete the internship fulfill the Kendall College of Arts and Sciences’ senior capstone project requirement.

Degrees Awarded

Upon completion of the program requirements, students will be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree associated with their engineering or science major and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. Neither the B.S. nor the B.A. will be awarded until the student has completed the requirements for both degrees under the IEL/ISL program.
