Students seeking the Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering (B.S.P.E.) degree must complete one of the following degree options:

General Option (12 hours)


Petroleum Engineering Professional Course (3 hours)


Petroleum Engineering Elective (3 hours)


3000- or 4000-level PE course selected with approval of advisor

Technical Electives (6 hours)


Selected with approval of advisor. One technical elective may be a PE course.

Chemical Engineering Option (22 hours)


Geosciences Option (12 hours)


Petroleum Engineering Professional Course (3 hours)

*Some students will complete a modified series of courses; See Special Requirements .

**Block course electives are limited to courses that qualify as humanities or social sciences electives as defined by ABET accreditation criteria and the Tulsa curriculum requirements. These courses must demonstrate depth of study in at least one area rather than be simply a series of introductory courses.

***For 2019-2020, the PE 4863  topic which qualifies for this option is Surface Facilities.

A student must earn a grade point average of 2.0 or higher in the major (all petroleum engineering courses and all approved technical electives) and 2.0 overall to be a candidate for a degree in petroleum engineering.

Foundation courses in petroleum engineering include PE 1001 , MATH 2014 , MATH 2024 , GEOL 1014 , CHEM 1013 , and PHYS 2053 . Refer to the table  for specific GPA requirements. 

In addition, a student majoring in petroleum engineering must satisfy the following requirements:  PE 1001  must be completed successfully in a single attempt; a student may earn no more than 4 grades of ‘F’ or ‘W’ in petroleum engineering courses.
