The aim of the undergraduate program in English and Creative Writing is to educate students in literature and language and in the practice of writing, and to enhance their understanding of the tradition of liberal arts. The major develops the ability to understand and appreciate literature in its historical and cultural contexts, to read closely and analytically in a broad range of texts, and to write about language and literature with clarity and precision.

The English and creative writing core emphasizes basic experiences of Anglophone literary traditions, introduces students to critical methods and theoretical approaches to literary study, and teaches students to hone their writing craft. On this foundation, English and Creative Writing electives focus on literary periods, major literary figures, several genres of literature, and creative writing. Work in related areas such as foreign languages, philosophy, history, media studies, and film studies is encouraged. The overall aim of the program is flexible, yet directive and cumulative, and the program provides broad opportunities for professional as well as personal post-graduate application.

Undergraduate Academic Programs

The faculty of English and Creative Writing offer courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in English and creative writing . The interdisciplinary character of the creative writing specialization is reflected through cross-listings with the faculty of media studies  and film studies .

Teacher Education Program

Students seeking secondary teacher certification in English must declare education as a second major. This double major leads to teacher certification in Oklahoma (and preparation for certification in other states). In order to qualify, students must complete all the tasks listed on the Department of Education page of this Bulletin, including acceptance into the Teacher Education Program and to the Student Teaching Semester.

English education majors are assigned two faculty mentors, one in the Department of English and Creative Writing and one in the Department of Education.
