English and Creative Writing, B.A.


Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the English & Creative Writing degree will:

  1. Analyze historically varied Anglophone literary texts.
  2. Apply knowledge of critical and creative practices in written, digital, and/or multi-modal projects that reflect awareness of the conventions of more than one genre.
  3. Produce a body of work that displays proficiency in the students’ chosen area(s) of emphasis and includes a self-assessment of their intellectual and/or creative process.
  4. Produce work that responds to ethical dilemmas.
  5. Produce work that engages with human and cultural diversity.
  6. Organize and/or contribute to a minimum of one project that extends beyond the classroom in engaging cultural discourses.

Tulsa Curriculum and First Year Experience (51-53 hours)


Core Curriculum and First Year Experience (26-28 hours)


General Curriculum (25 hours)


  • Block I Aesthetic Inquiry and Creative Experience (6 hours)
  • Block II Historical and Social Interpretation (12 hours)
  • Block III Scientific Investigation (7 hours including one lab)

English and Creative Writing Major Requirements (30 hours)


Students who enroll in this major select one of two specializations: literature or creative writing.

Major Electives (21 hours)


Major electives must be at the 3000 level or 4000 level.

Upper-level English courses are assigned one or more “tags” designating them as Creative (C)  , Diversity (D)  , Early (E)  , and/or Media and Genre (M)  . Students select “tagged” electives according to their specialization.

Literature Specialization


Students who select the literature specialization complete major electives according to the following table:

  • 1 Creative (C) or Media and Genre (M)
  • 1 Diversity (D)
  • 1 Early (E)
  • 5 other upper-level major electives

Creative Writing Specialization


Students who select the creative writing specialization complete major electives according to the following table:

  • 4 Creative (C)
  • 1 Diversity (D)
  • 1 Early (E)
  • 2 other upper-level major electives

Required Minor (12 hours)


In consultation with the English faculty mentor, students choose at least 12 hours of coursework in a subject demonstrably related to English. At least six hours in the minor field must be at the 3000 or 4000 level. 

General Electives (25-27 hours)


Total: 120 hours


Teacher Certification


Students seeking secondary teacher certification in English should consult their faculty mentor to determine subject area courses that are appropriate and the Oklahoma State Department of Education regarding alternative certification.
