Mission

The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to provide students with an understanding of mathematical knowledge, methods, and analytical skills needed to pursue advanced degrees or careers requiring expertise in mathematics.

Undergraduate Academic Programs

The faculty of mathematics offer courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in mathematics, and the Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics (B.S.A.M.) degree.

Both a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)  and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.)  degree in mathematics are offered and provide the student with a sound foundation in mathematics. The B.A. program encourages the study of languages, whereas the B.S. program emphasizes supporting study in the physical sciences and computer science.

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics (B.S.A.M.)  is offered with four options: computer science, engineering, biomathematics, and business. Each student must select one option and meet those requirements. The options provide a field of application for the mathematics student. All options carry the same mathematics requirement but differ in required supporting subjects. The applied mathematics program provides a solid foundation in undergraduate mathematics in preparation for graduate study or for a position in business or industry.

Teacher Education Program

Students seeking secondary teacher certification in mathematics must declare education as a second major. This double major leads to teacher certification in Oklahoma (and preparation for certification in other states). In order to qualify, students must complete all the tasks listed on the Department of Education  page in this Bulletin, including acceptance into the Teacher Education Program and to the Student Teaching Semester.

In addition, math education majors must include the following courses as part of their mathematics major:

Mathematics education majors are assigned two faculty mentors, one in the Department of Mathematics and one in the Department of Education .
