ATRG 7812 Cultural Competency in Athletic Training

(2 hours)
This course is designed to equip athletic training students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to effectively work with diverse populations in sports medicine settings. Recognizing the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity in healthcare delivery, this course will explore the intersection of culture, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, and other dimensions of diversity as they relate to athletic training practice. Through a combination of theoretical frameworks, case studies, interactive discussions, and practical experiences, students will examine the impact of culture on health beliefs, behaviors, and access to care within athletic and sports contexts. Emphasis will be placed on developing cultural humility, self-awareness, and communication strategies to foster inclusive and equitable healthcare environments.
