Learning Outcomes
Students who complete the undergraduate program in Biochemistry will demonstrate skills relevant to:
-
Display fundamental understanding of the chemical and physical foundations of biological systems through (a) responses on lecture quizzes and tests, (b) responses on laboratory quizzes and practical exams, or (c) written reports from laboratory exercises.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of the biochemical processes within and between cells through (a) responses on lecture quizzes and tests, (b) responses on laboratory quizzes and practical exams, or (c) written reports from laboratory exercises.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of the organic molecules in biological systems and their roles in physiological processes through (a) responses on lecture quizzes and tests, (b) responses on laboratory quizzes and practical exams, or (c) written reports from laboratory exercises.
- Demonstrate the skills necessary to characterize substances based upon instrumental analysis of their chemical and physical properties through (a) responses on lecture quizzes and tests, (b) responses on laboratory quizzes and practical exams, or (c) written reports from laboratory exercises.
- Analyze and evaluate scientific data and/or current literature; this will be assessed through experimental design, problem solving, presentations, class discussions, class essays, or term papers.

Biochemistry Major Requirements
Advanced Electives
- STAT 2013 Introduction to Statistics
- Approved advanced electives in science, mathematics, computer science, or engineering at the 2000-level or higher chosen in consultation with advisor. (6 hours)
General Electives (18 hours)
Students should consult with faculty advisors when selecting general electives that will best prepare the student for their post-graduate goals. Biochemistry, Pre-Med Option, B. S. B., Additional Requirements
The Tulsa Core Curriculum math requirements are met by courses in the major. The Tulsa General Curriculum requirements for Quad IV (7 hours) can be met by courses in the major. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry are not required to complete coursework in a foreign language. Chemistry and biochemistry majors must earn a grade point average of 2.0 or higher in the major and overall to graduate. |
