International Business and Language, B.S.B.A.


The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, B.S.B.A. with a major in international business and language combines the business core, emphasis on international business, and language proficiency in French, German, or Spanish. Students interested in Chinese or Russian may consider the self-designed major option through Kendall College of Arts and Sciences .  There is also an American track  available for international students.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the undergraduate program in international business and language will:

  1. demonstrate proficiency in a target language (French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, or Spanish - or in English for students in the American track);
  2. evaluate the effects of multiple national economies, political and legal systems, and regulatory bodies on firm management and performance;
  3. be able to apply cultural awareness and sensitivity in general and specific awareness of the culture where the student’s target language is the dominant language.

Language Concentration (27 hours)


Language concentrations include 27 hours at the 3000-4000 levels as specified by the requirements for the major in the language selected, including an on-campus business language course. An internship in a country where the language is used extensively may be taken as part of the language concentration.

Courses required for each language concentration are as follows:

French Language Courses (above FR 2013) (27 hours)


  • FR 3023  Advanced French
  • FR 3033  Analysis of French Texts
  • FR 3423  Business French
  • 3 hours of French Culture elective at the 3000 level.
  • 15 hours of French electives at the 4000 level; 3 hours may be a French language internship.

German Language Courses (above GERM 2013) (27 hours)


  • 3 hours of German Culture elective (3000 level)
  • 9 hours of German electives (3000 level)
  • 15 hours of German electives at the 4000 level; 3 hours may be a German language internship.

Spanish Language Courses (above SPAN 2013) (27 hours)


  • SPAN 3003  Composition in Spanish
  • SPAN 3033  Explication of Hispanic Literary Texts
  • SPAN 3123  Introduction to Spanish Linguistics
  • SPAN 3463  Business Spanish
  • 3 hours Spanish Elective (Culture) (3000 level)
  • 12 hours Spanish electives at the 4000 level; 3 hours may be a Spanish Language internship.

Total: 120 hours


International Business and Language, B.S.B.A., Additional Requirements


IBL majors must complete ENGL 1033 , MATH 1143 , MATH 1243  (or higher level math courses), and ENGL 3003  with a grade of C or higher.

IBL majors must complete each of the Business Core courses with a grade of C or higher, except for courses designated Pass/Fail.

ECON 2013  and ECON 2023  are required courses in the Business Core which are also used to fulfill part of the Tulsa Curriculum Block II requirement. IBL majors are not required to complete additional Block II courses other than ECON 2013  and ECON 2023 .

A foreign study experience and/or a foreign practical business experience of at least six weeks, approved by the faculty and the Center for Global Engagement, is required.

The student will be able to earn a second degree, Bachelor of Arts, with a major in  French, German, or Spanish if they wish.  Declaring the second degree is optional and is done through the Center for Academic Advising.  

If a student pursues the self-designed major option  for a language proficiency in Mandarin Chinese or Russian, declaration of the second degree is required.  Neither the B.S. nor the B.A. will be awarded until the student has completed the requirements for both degrees.
