Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the undergraduate program in sociology will:

Think critically; write in a clear, organized and grammatical way; make effective oral presentations.
1. Synthesize and present sociological material in a coherent fashion.
2. Employ evidence in presenting or making arguments.
Demonstrate an understanding of the core ideas of Sociology.
1. Competently use basic ideas such as social structure, institution, culture, ideology, identity, stratification, social change, status, norm and socialization.
2. Demonstrate familiarity with key facts and generalizations about social institutions such as family, education, health care, economy, and political system.
Be familiar with different forms of evidence used in social analysis; understand both quantitative and qualitative analysis; demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues that arise in the course of research.
1. Identify multiple forms of evidence available for social analysis.
2. Interpret two-variable and three-variable tables.
3. Understand correlation, causation, and their difference.
4. Collect and analyze qualitative data.
5. Understand professional codes of ethics, including confidentiality, informed consent, and minimization of risk to research participants.
Develop an understanding of how to prepare for professional life after graduation from TU.
1. Research occupations and/or graduate school degrees and programs.
2. Learn to use resources provided by Career Services
3. Explain one’s potential value to employers.

Sociology Major Requirements (30 hours)

Students in Sociology may take ANTH 4973 senior seminar in Anthropology in lieu of SOC 4973 senior seminar.

Required Courses (12 hours)

Sociology Electives (18 hours)

Eighteen additional hours, with 15 hours at 3000-4000 level, to be chosen with faculty advisor’s approval. SOC 2133 /WS 2133 is an approved lower-level major elective.

Anthropology Electives

The following anthropology classes should be considered as electives in sociology:

Required Minor (12 hours)

Students must choose, with the advisor’s approval, at least 12 hours in a minor field, 6 of which must be at the 3000-4000 level. Some minors require more than 12 hours.
