Film Studies, B.A.


The major in film studies provides liberal arts students with the history, theory and production techniques for all forms of visual storytelling, including film and television. The degree prepares the professionally minded student with the knowledge and experience necessary to study in graduate school, enter the entertainment industries, or to advance in related fields, such as law or business, where a deep understanding of narrative strategies may be central to success.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the undergraduate program in film will demonstrate or show proficiency in

  1. The analysis and interpretation of the historical, theoretical, artistic, and production elements of film, such as screenwriting, film production, postproduction, theory/criticism, and film scoring.
  2. The production of film from script to final edit and the use of technological tools as evidenced by the creation of cinematic projects.
  3. Knowledge of the professional requirements of the film industry and related fields.

  • Block I Aesthetic Inquiry and Creative Experience (6 hours)
  • Block II Historical and Social Interpretation (12 hours)
  • Block III Scientific Investigation (7 hours including one lab)

Film Studies Major Requirements (33 hours)


Electives (27 hours)


Film studies majors must take a minimum of nine courses from the following list of electives. At least two courses, normally beginning with FLM 2013  taken in the first year, must be in production. Seven of the nine courses must be at the 3000-level or above. The entire schedule - with a particular emphasis on a subfield such as production, screenwriting, recording/scoring, and/or film theory/history - will be determined by the student in consultation with a film studies advisor.

Senior Project


In the senior year, film studies majors enroll in FLM 4973 Senior Project  and spend a semester completing a project that may be a short film (narrative, documentary, animated), screenplay, or scholarly study. This course fulfills the Tulsa Curriculum Senior Project requirement and does not count as part of the major.

Required Minor (12 hours)


Film studies majors may minor in a variety of fields that complement the major such as the Creative Writing Minor  or Art Minor . Courses in the minor cannot count toward the major. At least 12 credit hours must be completed with six hours at the 3000 level or higher. Some minors require more than 12 hours.
