Tulsa Curriculum and First Year Experience (51-53 hours)

General Curriculum (25 hours)
- Block I Aesthetic Inquiry and Creative Experience (6 hours)
- Block II Historical and Social Interpretation (12 hours)
- Block III Scientific Investigation (7 hours including one lab)
Major Requirements (30 hours)
Students who enroll in this major select one of two specializations: literature or creative writing.
English and Creative Writing Core (6 hours)
Two of the following courses:
Major Electives (24 hours)
Students may choose to complete the third core course and apply it to the major electives requirement. Otherwise, major electives must be at the 3000 level or 4000 level.
Upper-level English courses are assigned one or more “tags” designating them as Creation (C) , Diversity (D) , Early (E) , and/or Media and Genre (M) . Students select “tagged” electives according to their specialization.
Literature Specialization
Students who select the literature specialization complete major electives according to the following table:
- 1 Creative (C) or Media and Genre (M)
- 1 Diversity (D)
- 1 Early (E)
- 5 other upper-level major electives
Creative Writing Specialization
Students who select the creative writing specialization complete major electives according to the following table:
- 4 Creative (C)
- 1 Diversity (D)
- 1 Early (E)
- 2 other upper-level major electives
Required Minor (12 hours)
In consultation with the English advisor, students choose at least 12 hours of coursework in a subject demonstrably related to English. At least six hours in the minor field must be at the 3000 or 4000 level. Some minors require more than 12 hours.
General Electives (25 hours)
Teacher Certification
Students seeking secondary teacher certification in English should consult their academic advisors to determine subject area courses that are appropriate and the Oklahoma State Department of Education regarding alternative certification.
TURC Tutorial
The TURC Tutorial is a four-course sequence of student-designed independent study for English majors enrolled in the Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge (TURC). English TURC students normally will enroll for six hours of the first-year course (ENGL 1983 ), and three hours each of the second- (ENGL 2983 ), third- (ENGL 3983 ), and fourth- (ENGL 4983 ) year courses.
