Admission
Applicants to the Master of Science in Global Energy program must have completed a baccalaureate degree with an overall G.P.A. of 3.0 from a regionally accredited university.
A completed application, along with an application fee, must be submitted to the Graduate School along with:
- statement of purpose,
- official transcripts from all educational institutions the applicant has previously attended,
- a professional resume,
- GMAT (minimum 500) or GRE (equivalent) scores,
- acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores (for applicants without a previous degree from a country in which English is the primary language),
- three writing samples pertaining to topics of interest to global energy, and
- two letters of recommendation from professional references.
Those applicants holding undergraduate degrees from The University of Tulsa with a G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher receive a GMAT/GRE waiver for admission. Applicants with a post baccalaureate degree (graduate or law) will receive a GMAT/GRE waiver. Students with five or more years of professional experience reflecting progressively increasing responsibility combined with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher may also have the GMAT/GRE requirement waived.
Applications are reviewed by an admissions committee which will evaluate the documentation and evidence submitted by each candidate. Acceptance is based on a holistic review of prior academic achievement, personal motivation, work experience, and related qualifications that point to the likelihood of success. Other supporting materials may be submitted by the applicant or requested by the admissions committee. The admissions committee may also request an interview.
All applicants admitted to the program are expected to provide evidence of having completed appropriate undergraduate foundation courses. Applicants without such background will be required to satisfy the requirements before enrolling in the Master of Science in Global Energy program. Foundation requirements may include undergraduate coursework in economics and/or statistics. Demonstrated Excel literacy may also be required either through successful completion of an online exam, completion of an online course/seminar, or equivalent undergraduate coursework.
Curriculum Requirements
The Master of Science in Global Energy is a 39-credit-hour program, encompassing eleven required courses plus a required orientation and two electives. A thesis is not required.
Students who start the program full-time in the fall or spring semester can expect to complete it in three successive semesters plus one intervening summer, for a total time of 16 months.
The summer semester is intended to involve a “global experience” which can be completed in one of the following ways:
- a study abroad experience accompanied by a TU faculty member,
- an international experience within the United States (e.g., a shadowing or mentoring experience at a foreign consulate/embassy),
- an internationally-focused research project/report that may potentially lead to a publication,
- or an internship with a government agency or national oil company doing business in the U.S.
Students who take fewer than twelve credit hours per semester or need to repeat a course will need additional time to complete the program and may end up taking additional hours, depending on their citizenship/visa status.
Students must also complete a zero-credit hour orientation seminar offered just prior to the beginning of each fall semester.
