The accelerated master’s degree program enables highly motivated students to begin earning hours towards a Master of Arts (M.A.)  degree in history while completing requirements towards a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in history.  The accelerated master’s program requires the same number of credits and level of work as the current B.A. and M.A. (thesis option)  degree programs. All students admitted to the accelerated master’s program will write a master’s thesis as part of their program of study.

The typical student will apply for admission to the accelerated master’s program in his or her junior year. In addition to submission of a graduate school application, transcripts, three letters of recommendation and GRE scores, applicants to the program must have the following:

• a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5,
• a writing sample (a paper from a history class),
• a statement of purpose which clearly outlines the student’s research interests and why he or she wants to pursue the accelerated master’s degree program,
• three letters of recommendation – two from faculty members in the Department of History , one specifically from a professor who has agreed to work with the student in the accelerated master’s degree program, as well as a third from a reference of the student’s choice, and
• successful completion of HIST 3903 History Colloquium.
