The certificate in Medieval and Early Modern Studies, also known as MEMS, is an interdisciplinary program spanning the years c. 300 to 1800 CE with a focus on the geography, cultures, and the intellectual traditions of Europe. At the same time, the program is predicated on an awareness that Europe did not exist in isolation and must be studied in broader context, with attention to its environs, colonies, trade routes, and to sources of artistic, intellectual, and theological inspirations outside of its geographical boundaries. The program includes offerings from the Department of Anthropology , the School of Art, Design and Art History , the Department of English Language and Literature , the School of Language and Literature , the Department of History , the School of Music , and the Department of Philosophy and Religion .

Learning Objectives

Students will:

Demonstrate knowledge of major cultural and social developments that took place during the medieval and early modern periods (c.300-1800 CE).
Be able to analyze events and movements in light of cultural values and socio-historical conditions.
Demonstrate sound research, intellectual analysis of source material, critical thinking, and effective writing skills that will help them in their professions and careers.

Conduct research using both primary and secondary sources from the period.
Negotiate conflicting information and interpretations of events and movements.
Write clearly and effectively, using language appropriate to the discipline.
Draw logical conclusions from research sources.

Certificate Requirements (21 hours)

Students must complete 21 hours of approved course work with a minimum of 12 hours at the 3000-level or above and must take at least one course in three (3) of the disciplinary areas listed. The certificate requires at least one Medieval (M) and at least one Early Modern (EM) course. If a course is listed as both M and EM, the student, in consultation with the Program Director, may designate which chronological period the course will fulfill. The remaining 12 hours may be completed in any discipline(s).
