The University of Tulsa Department of Education is committed to cultivating effective teachers who are critical thinkers, skillful learners, caring community partners, and engaged democratic citizens.

Undergraduate Academic Programs

The faculty of education offer courses leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in education and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in education and elementary education .

Teacher Education Program

All programs listed in the Education, B.A. and the Education, B.S. , the Elementary Education, B.A. , the Music Education, Instrumental, B.M.E. , and the Music Education, Vocal, B.M.E. lead to teacher certification in Oklahoma (and preparation for certification in other states). Students must complete all the tasks below in order to qualify, including acceptance into the Teacher Education Program and to the Student Teaching Semester.

In the pre-application phase, students must:

Declare education or music education as a major,
Complete EDUC 1101 with a C or higher,
Complete EDUC 2103 with a C or higher, and
Take and pass the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET), or take and pass the PRAXIS Core Academic Skills for Educators Test, or achieve a score of 22 or better on the ACT with the writing test, or achieve a score of 1120 on the SAT with the writing test, or achieve a 2.75 GPA in at least 30 hours of the Tulsa Curriculum.

In the application to the Teacher Education Program phase, students must:

Maintain a 3.00 GPA in education courses taken to date,
Maintain a 3.00 GPA in their subject area courses to date, and
Maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 to date, and
Submit their application for the Teacher Education Program (including transcripts and test score reports)

In the application for Student Teaching phase, students must:

Maintain a 3.00 GPA in education courses taken to date,
Maintain a 3.00 GPA in their subject area courses to date,
Maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 to date,
Complete the foreign language requirement of the state of Oklahoma that teacher education students demonstrate conversational skills at a novice high level in a language other than English,
Complete the appropriate Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT),
Submit their application for Student Teaching (including transcripts and OSAT score report), and
Complete their subject area major.

In the program completion phase, students must:

Complete 12 credit hours (625 clock hours) of student teaching with a grade of C or higher,
Complete EDUC 4971 with a grade of C or higher,
Complete the Praxis Performance Assessment of Teaching (PPAT),
Maintain an overall GPA of 2.75, and
Apply for teacher certification with the State Department of Education.

Second Language Proficiency

Students completing an education major must demonstrate proficiency in a second language offered by The University of Tulsa. Language requirements vary from College to College. Students should consult with their faculty mentors for specific requirements.

Professional Examinations

Prospective teachers in Oklahoma must pass the appropriate Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT), and the Praxis Performance Assessment for Teachers (PPAT) to be eligible for certification.
