The University of Tulsa Department of Education is committed to cultivating effective teachers who are critical thinkers, skillful learners, caring community partners, and engaged democratic citizens.

To achieve the goal of developing transformative professional educators, there are early and extensive clinical opportunities.

Education students benefit from TU’s collaborations and partnerships with schools, programs and organizations including:

Undergraduate Academic Programs

The faculty of education offer courses leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in education  and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in education  and elementary education .

Program Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the undergraduate program education will be able to:

  • Demonstrate mastery of the central concepts and tools of inquiry of their discipline(s).
  • Plan research-based instruction that advances the learning of each student.
  • Utilize research-based pedagogy that advances the learning of each student.
  • Design curriculum based on state and national standards.
  • Demonstrate mastery of the assessment cycle as a component of teaching.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the processes of human development and learning.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development. 
  • Promote the success of each student based on a demonstrated understanding of the socio-cultural, historical, and institutional contexts of education.

Teacher Education Program

All programs listed in the Education, B.A.  and the Education, B.S. , the Education, Elementary, B.A. , the Music Education, Instrumental, B.M.E. , and the Music Education, Vocal, B.M.E.  lead to teacher certification in Oklahoma (and preparation for certification in other states). Students must complete all the tasks below in order to qualify, including acceptance into the Teacher Education Program and to the Student Teaching Semester.

In the pre-application phase, students must:

  1. Declare education or music education as a major,
  2. Complete EDUC 1101  with a C or higher,
  3. Complete EDUC 2103  with a C or higher, and
  4. Take and pass the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET), a score of 22 or better on the ACT with the writing test, or a score of 1120 on the SAT with the writing test.

In the application to the Teacher Education Program phase, students must:

  1. Submit their application for the Teacher Education Program (including transcripts and test score report),
  2. Maintain a 3.00 GPA in education courses taken to date,
  3. Maintain a 3.00 GPA in their subject area courses to date, and
  4. Maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 to date.

In the application for Student Teaching phase, students must:

  1. Maintain a 3.00 GPA in education courses taken to date,
  2. Maintain a 3.00 GPA in their subject area courses to date,
  3. Maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 to date,
  4. Complete the foreign language requirement of the state of Oklahoma that teacher education students demonstrate conversational skills at a novice high level in a language other than English,
  5. Take and pass the appropriate Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT),
  6. Submit application for Student Teaching (including transcript and OSAT score report), and
  7. Complete their subject area major.

In the program completion phase, students must:

  1. Complete 12 credit hours (625 clock hours) of student teaching with a grade of C or better,
  2. Complete EDUC 4971  with a grade of C or higher,
  3. Complete and pass the Praxis Performance Assessment of Teaching (PPAT),
  4. Maintain an overall GPA of 2.75, and
  5. Apply for teacher certification with the State Department of Education.

Second Language Proficiency

Students completing an education major must demonstrate proficiency in a second language offered by The University of Tulsa. Language requirements vary from College to College. Students should consult with their academic advisors for specific requirements.

Professional Examinations

Prospective teachers in Oklahoma must pass the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET), the appropriate Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT), the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Examination (OPTE), or the Praxis Performance Assessment for Teachers (PPAT) to be eligible for certification.
