POL 2123 Internet, Social Media and Democracy

International Studies
(3 hours) Block Two
The rise of the Internet and social media were once believed to herald the golden age of democracy. This course examines how total connectivity and digital surveillance facilitated by the Internet and social media now threaten to destroy democracy and fuel a new wave of authoritarianism. It investigates how truths are constituted, the assault on expertise, the evolution of propaganda and how disinformation campaigns facilitated by social media platforms threaten the health of democratic polities across the world.
