ARTH 4333 Magnificent Art: Identity at the Renaissance Court

(3 hours) HCGD
Will consider the artistic production of European courts of the Early Modern period. We will investigate the ways in which art was used by rulers and courtiers to create and maintain political, social, and personal identities. This course will address themes such as magnificence, collecting, and the roles of women and artists at court. We will examine ephemeral works and material culture as well as more traditional media. We will also consider the multiple meanings and possibilities for slippage between meaning in court art, and the challenges and opportunities such multivalent works afford art historians. Prerequisite: ARTH 2203 , ARTH 2223 , WS 2013  or permission of instructor. Same as WS 4333 .
