Selected short poems in English from the Middle Ages to the present, studied in relation to generic definitions of “the lyric”, along with analysis of the language and syntax of poetry; historical and cultural considerations; lyric sub-genres, such as the elegy, sonnet, and ode; and meter, rhyme, and other element of prosody.
