Energy and Natural Resources Law, JD/LLM

The dual JD/LLM program in energy and natural resources law will not be available to students who matriculate in the College of Law after Fall 2019.  Students who matriculate in Fall 2019 must apply for the dual JD/LLM program in energy and natural resources prior to the end of the Spring 2021 term.

Select students who have a strong interest in careers in the fields of energy, environmental and natural resources law may qualify for a dual degree program in which a JD and LLM in Energy and Natural Resources Law may be earned in six semesters plus six hours of summer school.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Graduates who earn the dual degree will demonstrate knowledge in the area of energy and natural resources law necessary for effective and responsible participation in the legal profession and energy industry by:
  1. Understanding various sources of law and legal authority in the areas of energy, natural resources, and environmental law, the relative priority of these laws, and how the laws interact; and
  2. Demonstrating ability to identify, describe and apply fundamental rules governing various issues in the energy, natural resources, and environmental law areas.
  1. Graduates who earn the dual degree will demonstrate the ability to write legal documents to an audience in the field of energy, natural resources, and environmental law that are clear, concise, well-reasoned, organized, professional in tone, appropriate to the audience and circumstances, and, if appropriate, contain proper citation to authority.

Requirements

To earn the dual degree students must complete 98 hours consisting of the following:

Required SERL Courses (9 hours)


Experiential Learning (6 hours)


Clinical courses or externships, of which at least three hours must be earned in a SERL Externship.

Energy Law Journal (3 hours)


Certificate of Participation on the Energy Law Journal which requires completion of at least 3 hours of credit on the ELJ editorial board and a paper approved by the College of Law faculty for seminar credit.

JD Electives (29 hours)


Selected from electives in the Juris Doctor Program  and the Sustainable Energy and Resources Law (SERL) Certificate  not counted toward other requirements for this program.

Notes:


Nine hours of SERL courses will count toward fulfilling both the JD and LLM requirements.

*Seminar topics and credit vary. Only the Environmental Public Health Law Seminar (2 hours) is a SERL Elective.
