The College of Engineering and Natural Sciences  and the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences  offer the International Engineering and Language/International Science and Language dual degree program that offers students the opportunity to earn a degree in an engineering or science discipline and a degree in a language offered by the School of Language and Literature  in five years.

The program features a study abroad experience during the fourth year. During the first semester abroad, students study engineering, science, language, culture and electives in the target language at a partner university. During the second semester abroad, students complete an internship with an engineering, science or technology firm in the target language and country.

Engineering and science majors are available in biochemistry , chemical engineering , chemistry , electrical engineering , electrical and computer engineering , engineering physics (electrical engineering option)  engineering physics (mechanical engineering option) , engineering physics (bioengineering option)  , geophysics , geosciences (geology option) , mechanical engineering  and physics .

Language majors are available in Chinese studies , French , German  and Spanish .

Application Requirements

Students apply to the IEL/ISL program as part of their application to TU or soon after their arrival on campus.

Continuing Eligibility Requirements

Students enrolled in the IEL/ISL program will be assigned advisors in both the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences. Students must meet with each of their two advisors each semester. Students are subject to the minimum grade and other academic requirements of both degree programs in which they are enrolled.

Students enrolled in the IEL/ISL program are required to take the Language Placement exam as early as possible in their TU career, and to meet with the IEL/ISL program director each semester to stay on track. Students should begin language courses as early as their first semester. Students must take at least two semesters or the equivalent of 3000- or 4000-level language courses prior to the year abroad.

Study Abroad

During the fall semester abroad, students take up to five courses (usually two block courses and three non-core engineering or sciences courses or electives) in the target language. Students receive credit toward Tulsa Curriculum requirements for both the B.A. and B.S.; College of Engineering and Natural Sciences’ requirements for the B.S.; and, if the courses are taken in the local language, Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences’ language requirements for the B.A.

During the spring semester abroad, students enroll in one credit hour of internship. They retain full-time status while enrolled in the internship. Students who complete the internship fulfill the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences’ senior capstone project requirement.

Degrees Awarded

Upon completion of the program requirements, students will be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree associated with their engineering or science major and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. Neither the B.S. nor the B.A. will be awarded until the student has completed the requirements for both degrees under the ESL/ISL program.
