LAW - 6023 Copyright Law in the Digital Age(3 hours)
Provides students with a grounding in the fundamentals of United States copyright law, including: the subject matter of copyrights; ownership and transfer of copyrights; deposit and registration; publication and notice; duration and renewal of copyrights; the fair use doctrine; copyright infringement and remedies for infringement. Special attention will be given to the problems posed to copyright law by emergent digital technologies, e.g., peer-to-peer file sharing (Napster, Grokster, Aimster, and beyond); framing, linking, caching, and mirroring Internet technologies; freelance journalists and digital periodical libraries; the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s safe harbors for internet service providers and sanctions against manufacturers and users of digital circumvention technologies.
